Garage Door Won’t Open or Close?

So, your garage door is refusing to operate properly. First, go check the batteries in your garage’s remote control. This could be the simple fix that will get you out of reading more!

Ah, you’re back. Garage door still not working? Then, it’s probably one of the other common garage door problems listed below.

Garage Door Maintenance

Out-of-Sync Keypad

Simply, your keypad may be out of sync. This makes it difficult to send a signal to the rest of your garage door’s system. If the signal cannot be transmitted, your garage door won’t know whether to open or close. Or it’s just been a while since you’ve reset the keypad code, and it needs an update. Whatever the case, a simple reset should do the trick. Reset instructions can be found in the user manual you received with the keypad system.

Motor Switch

Did you know your garage door has a motor switch? This switch comes in handy during power outages, allowing it to be opened and closed manually. Depending on where the switch is located on the motor, it could be susceptible to being caught and pulled, enabling manual mode. So, if you’ve checked your remote’s batteries and reset the keypad, then the next place to look may be the motor.

Photo-Eye Sensors

Another reason your garage isn’t working could be one of its safety features being extra sensitive. Photo-eye sensors can be found on both sides of your garage door, towards the bottom. They send a signal to each other and if that signal is interrupted, the doors will go back up. If the garage door won’t operate, it may be due to the sensors being:

  • Blocked/obstructed
  • Dirty
  • Misaligned

All these situations could leave the sensor “clogged” and freeze the door. To fix these issues, inspect your photo-eye sensors, and your door could be fixed with a quick adjustment.

Bent Tracks

Now we are getting down to the nitty-gritty. At this point, if your garage door still isn’t closing or opening, there could be a serious issue with the tracks. If the tracks are running smoothly, they’ll glide. If the tracks are grinding, they may be the source of your garage door problems. Tracks help keep the garage door in line, making sure it is straight as it opens and closes. If these metal tracks are bent at any time, they’ll struggle to function. Tracks are difficult to fix and something we advise you don’t do on your own. Contact a reputable garage door company like us at Precision Door to resolve that problem.

Broken Torsion or Extension Springs

If your garage door’s motor is chugging along, but the door itself refuses to budge, there may be an issue with the springs in your assembly. Spring issues are inevitable on garage door systems due to their constant wear and tear. Each spring has a maximum number of cycles it should last; once those cycles are up, the springs need to be replaced. If they aren’t replaced, the springs could snap suddenly and are prone to do so when the door is activated. If a spring breaks, do not try to manually open the door. Broken springs are dangerous and often require professional repair.
